Dr. John Baucum was raised in the small rural South Texas community of Refugio. The primary business there was ranching and the oil and gas industry. His dad was a "roughneck" for Humble Oil & Refining Company during his early years and was later promoted to an office desk job. Dr. Baucum's mother obtained a vocational degree from a business college and worked as a paralegal for about 50 years. Growing up, Dr. Baucum was consumed with school work, church and Sunday School, neighborhood friends, Boy Scouts, Little League baseball, and hunting and fishing with his family. He feels privileged to have grown up in a small, extremely diverse community where everyone knew each other.
After college, dental school, and marriage, Dr. Baucum opened a solo private general practice in Corpus Christi. Thirty plus years later, he still practices within a few hundred yards of where he started his original practice. Becoming involved in organized dentistry was automatic for Dr. Baucum, since he was well acquainted with several dentists in his home area. Dr. Baucum's dental school personal character references were written by Dr Byron Coward, an orthodontist and past TDA president from Corpus Christi, Dr Charles Emery, general dentist from Corpus Christi and the first ever recipient of the Texas Academy of General Dentistry’s Dentist of the Year Award, and by Dr James Bauer, Dr. Baucum's childhood dentist from Refugio. Dr. Baucum feels the best way to thank these great individuals for his core beliefs and shared values is to continue their work.
Dr. Baucum is married to his high school sweetheart, Karon. Together they have 3 children, Darryl, Courtney, and Brian, and numerous grandchildren. Though his kids have moved off, Dr. Baucum and his wife, Karon, are proud to call Corpus Christi their home.
